The speaker is Ed Sidey from Greenfield Iowa. He was a lifelong newspaperman and the editor of the Adair County Free Press (now part of the Carroll Daily Times). I conducted this interview with him in 1989 speaking about the 1950s and 1960s. His ancestors started the newspaper 125 years before he and his brother sold it later in their lives. I was trying to get perspective from Americans of all stripes and he felt he was painting a picture of the way most of the folks in this town felt back then.

He was an articulate witness to the changes that took place in America and especially on universities in the 1960s. He went on to study blue-collar workers at the automobile plants in Michigan and developed a concept for work he called “new work”. He also wrote the popular books “On Being Free” and “The Experience Of Values”. I interviewed him in 1989 for my TV series looking at the 1960s. This interview was conducted in 1989 as part of my effort to produce a television series on the experiences that led to the 1960s rebellion. She was one of the 180 interviews I did. Each person was carefully selected because of their ability to express their experiences. This woman went on to become a stewardess (flight attendant) and became one of the leaders in the union that gave flight attendants the rights that they currently have. I interviewed several flight attendants who described a similar experience of what it was like in the 1960s and how that changed in the 1970s when they built their union - the Association of Flight Attendants. #stewardess #flightattendant #airlinehistory
